Promises Privacy Policy

Last updated: 29 August 2026

This policy explains what Promises collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. It is written plainly on purpose.

Promises is operated by Ryan Pryce, United Kingdom. If you have any question about this policy, write to [email protected].

The short version

Promises writes personal promise cards from what you tell it about your life. To do that, your answers are sent to the service that writes your cards and the service that reads them aloud. We do not sell your information, we do not show advertising, and we do not build advertising profiles about you.

What Promises collects

What you tell us during onboarding and in Your Story. This includes the name you choose to be called, where you are in life, what fills your days, how you would describe your walk with God, what you are carrying, what you are hoping for, anything you write in your own words, and the first names of any people you choose to add.

Your cards and your saved cards. The promise cards written for you, the scripture references matched to them, and which cards you have saved.

How you use the app. Which days you opened the app and completed your cards, your reminder time, your chosen theme, and your sound preference.

A random install identifier. A randomly generated ID created when you first open the app, used only to manage usage limits. It is not linked to you, to your device, or to any advertising identifier, and it is replaced if you delete and reinstall the app.

Subscription status. Whether you have an active trial or subscription. This is handled by Apple and RevenueCat. We never see your card number or your billing details.

Promises does not ask for your email address, your phone number, your contacts, your location, your photos, your microphone, or your health data. It does not collect your device model, your operating system version, or any advertising identifier.

Where your information is kept

Most of it stays on your phone. Your onboarding answers, your cards, your saved cards, your run of days, your settings, and any people you have added are stored on your device.

Some of it is sent out to write your cards. Each day, the answers you gave are sent to our server, which passes them to Anthropic's Claude model to write your cards. Anthropic processes this text to produce your cards and does not use it to train their models.

Card audio. When you play a card aloud, its text is sent to ElevenLabs to produce the audio. The audio is then stored on your device.

Hosting. Our server runs on Cloudflare, which hosts the service and the app's audio file and necessarily sees the network address of requests made to it.

Purchases. Apple and RevenueCat handle your subscription and tell the app whether it is active.

Crash reporting. Promises does not use any crash reporting or analytics service. If you have enabled sharing with app developers in your iOS settings, Apple may provide us with anonymous crash diagnostics.

We keep server-side records of these requests only as long as needed to run and troubleshoot the service, and then delete them.

About the people you name

If you add the first name of someone you carry — a husband, a child, a friend — that name is stored on your phone and is sent with your answers only so that your cards can name them.

  • A card that names a person cannot be shared as an image from the app.
  • Scripture shared from the back of a card contains only the Bible verse and its reference — nothing about you or anyone you have named.
  • Only add people who would be comfortable being named in your own private cards.

What we do not do

  • We do not sell your information to anyone.
  • We do not show advertising and we do not share your information with advertisers.
  • We do not use what you share to build a marketing profile.
  • We do not read your cards for any purpose other than running the service and fixing faults.

Your choices and your rights

Change what you have shared. Update or delete your answers at any time in Your Story. Changing them changes the cards written for you from then on.

Delete everything. Deleting the app removes everything held on your phone, including your answers, your cards and your saved cards. To ask us to delete anything held on our servers, write to [email protected] and we will do so within 30 days.

Turn off reminders. In the app, or in your phone's notification settings.

If you are in the UK or the EU, you have the right to ask for a copy of what we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to how it is used, and to complain to your data protection authority — in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk. Our lawful basis for processing your answers is your consent, given when you enter them, and the performance of our contract with you.

If you are in California, you have the right to know what is collected, to have it deleted, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by California law.

Children

Promises is for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information to us, write to [email protected] and we will delete it.

Security

Information sent between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit. Information stored on your phone is protected by your device's own security. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep as little as possible off your device for exactly this reason.

International transfers

Our service providers, including Anthropic and ElevenLabs, may process your information in the United States. Where information leaves the UK or the EU, it is transferred under Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent approved safeguard.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that materially affects you, we will tell you in the app before the change takes effect. The date at the top always shows the current version.
